Re-designing Classrooms

As I am looking at different teaching philosophies and curriculum development, I am thinking about re-designing my classroom and presentation of content. I want to do more research on the topics and will present my results here. This might turn into part of my capstone. We shall see....

Re-structure of classroom--
1. What class set up is more conducive to the 21st century learner?
2. Circle tables or desks in a structured setting?
3. Should I look at storing my things in a different location so the student feels more accessible to me and the learning environment is more open?

Presentation of curriculum--
1. Should I shift from a predominately paper-based curriculum to a more digital one?
2. Can I structure learning content using iPads for the majority of the class?
3. Can I give my lesson presentation and activities on the iPad and allow my students the freedom to complete them with their group-work?
4. Are high school students mature enough to handle roles in the learning process? Can they teach others in their groups and complete their roles in their groups affectively?
5. If I want these changes in presentation to take place, what classroom management rules should correspond to them?

Let's see what the research says...

Week 2 Re-cap

What...
As a class, we discussed the definition of language and the parts of language. We also discussed language disorders. The material covered in class was over chapters 1-2 of Teaching Students with Language and Communication Disorders by S. Jay Kruder. The class discussion took place on January 24, 2012.

Why...
This was a nice review for me. As an ESL teacher, I work with language development everyday. The chapters covered the definition of language, parts of language and language disorders. Even though I am familiar with the parts of language, it was new for me to see what types of language disorders correspond to the parts of language. I also liked review parts of communciation. It is sometimes easy to forget everything that communication actually entails. It is much much more complicated than only the words that we produce.

Reaction...
For this class session, I really enjoyed watching people finish my learning activity shown above. It helped me learn the content better by helping others complete the game. I feel when you have to teach something, you learn it. The manipulatives also help seeing information in a different way. Notes and PowerPoint are a good start, but I think making an activity based on the notes and PowerPoints helps you better understand the concept and figure out the small issue that you had understanding the reading.

Learned...
4 Elements of Communication
~Sender of the mesage
~Receiver of the message
~Shared intent
~Shared means

5 Parts of Language
~Phonology
~Morphology
~Syntax
~Semantics
~Pragmatics

Language disorder--impaired comprehension and/or other symbols systems
~Receptive language disorders
~Expressive Language disorders

*Problems with language form--phonology, syntax, or morphology related disorders
*Problems with content of language--semantics related disorders
*Problems with function of langauge--pragmatics related disorders
*Students may have any combination of language disorders

Goal Setting...
I need to look up web sites that characterize what children are more likely to have communication disorders and what type of communication disorders. I feel as if this would make the lesson very practical when I need to help evaluate a student.

All about me

I am a high school ESL instructor. I love what I do, but I wanted to provide a more complete service to the students I teach. I have had students in the past who need special  education services but have had a hard time receiving them because school  personnel are hesitant to test them because they are not fluent in English. I thought getting a masters in special education would help me serve these students better.

Students with disabilities have always held a special place in my heart. My youngest sister had a mild cognitive disability. I have always thought that students with disabilities see the world like we should always see it--full of hope and opportunity.  I love what I do.

I have two sisters and have grown up in the Peoria area. I got my undergraduate degree in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) education from Indiana Wesleyan University. For most of my life I have wanted to be a teacher. I also have wanted to work in inner city schools to try to make a difference in the lives of the students who need the most support. In August 2012, I was given the opportunity to move back home and teach in an inner city school. I hope to stay in the school for most of my career. It is the type of school that I would like to teach in, and it's at home.
